Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood

Film Review by Tati Cuervo

This film is directed by Quentin Tarantino. The main actors are Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt. With this cast of prestigious names within the film, you might guess that there is something special about it, and this is thoroughly true.

Despite the fact that both of them started their careers like dream-boy actors, they have showed, along the time, that they are just brilliant. Given the fact that, in this case, they have been directed by one of the wildest directors in the current Hollywood industry, the result is absolutely brilliant. Actually, both of them have been nominated for an Oscar Award because of their performance in this film: Leonardo DiCaprio in the leading role and Brad Pitt in the supporting role. The film has eight more nominations: best director, best cinematography, best costume design, best sound editing, sound mixing, writing (original screenplay) best picture.

The plot of the film takes place in the late sixties and it tells us about Rick Dalton’s life, characterised by Leonardo DiCaprio. He was a famous actor Webster films a few years ago. However, his current career is declining. In fact, he is starting to be aware he is becoming a has been. Nevertheless, he is still living in a marvellous mansion in the best area of Los Ángeles surrounded by trendy actors and directors. But he lives on his own. We also have Cliff Booth, Brad Pitt in the film, used to play his double in risky scenes and, after more than fifteen years working together, he has also become his handy man and best friend, although, nowadays, he hardly ever plays as a double. He is a rough man who has avoided going to jail all his life even though it is whispered he murdered his own wife. He lives in a caravan on the other side of the city with his dog, a huge and well trained pitbull. Both, Rick and Cliff, form a weirdo couple.

The film is full of action scenes. Every detail is taken care of perfectly so that the public enjoy it from the very beginning of the movie. Provided you have seen a Tarantino’s movie before, you would know that he has his own way of telling stories. In this case there is no doubt he keeps his style. Without spoiling it, I will merely say there is a ghastly scene in which the director shows us the dark side of a ghoulish mind. It is not suitable for all types of audiences. Pure Tarantino’s. Whatever you suppose it is going to happen next, he always manages to astound you.

In a nutshell, whether you like Tarantino’s style, it is one of his best films. Thus, I strongly recommend you this film. I long to see what is going to happen in the Oscar Award Ceremony.
